From Durian Farms to Personal Health: DSI Students Put Data Science and AI to Work

For data science, the real test is not whether a model performs well in isolation. It is whether data and technology can be brought together to address problems that people actually face.


Students from the Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Innovation (DSI) programme at the College of Interdisciplinary Studies (CISTU), Thammasat University, recently received national recognition for two very different applications of data science and artificial intelligence: one addressing challenges in durian farming and another exploring technology for personalised stress management.


DOO DURIAN: AI for Agricultural Decision-Making

DSI student joined students from the Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, to develop DOO DURIAN, which received 2nd Runner-up at AI for Thai Service Onboarding 2026.

The project combines AI-based image analysis with weather, geographic, and durian market-price data. Through a LINE-based service, farmers can submit images of durian leaves for preliminary screening of abnormalities and plant-disease risks, alongside information intended to support orchard management and decision-making.


The team received prizes and platform-standard support worth a combined THB 30,000.

Corticalm: Data and AI for Personalised Stress Management


A second group of DSI students received 1st Runner-up in a national health innovation concept competition organised by the Faculty of Physical Therapy, Srinakharinwirot University.

Under the mentorship of Asst. Prof. Rachasak Somyanonthanakul, Ph.D., the team developed Corticalm, an intelligent skin patch designed to detect and respond to stress.


The concept combines cortisol sensing from sweat with biometric and environmental data. AI is then used to analyse individual stress patterns, while an acoustic component is designed to provide preliminary stress relief.


Data Science Across Domains

Agriculture and personal health may appear far apart. For DSI, that difference is precisely what makes the two projects significant.


Data science increasingly operates at the intersection of technological capability, domain knowledge, user needs, and design. These projects demonstrate how students can move beyond coding and model development to think about how technology functions within specific social and professional contexts.


National recognition is welcome. More importantly, these projects offer a glimpse of the interdisciplinary talent CISTU seeks to develop through DSI: graduates capable of connecting data, AI, innovation, and real-world problems.
